fucking mice.
I am, like, really bad at this.
Anyway.
I flew to Missouri for Thanksgiving. While there, Liz and Zeb found a nest of "infant" mice underneath this Korean Hutch we've had for a hundred thousand years. They saved them: pink, blind, hairless, squeaking, and squirming, in a glad bowl for me to take care of when my mom and I returned from grocery shopping.
So, what did I get stuck with doing? Dumping the bowl of infant mice, that Zeb was so proud of saving, out in the front yard. And when I close my eyes I can still picture them squirming as they tumbled out of the bowl onto the cold wet ground. I hope they didn't take too long to die. I sat in my room cringing at the thought of what I had done.

a poem: but not by me
It’s good to feel you are close to me in the night, love,
invisible in your sleep, intently nocturnal,
while I untangle my worries
as if they were twisted nets.
Withdrawn, your heart sails through dream,
but your body, relinquished so, breathes
seeking me without seeing me perfecting my dream
like a plant that seeds itself in the dark.
Rising, you will be that other, alive in the dawn,
but from the frontiers lost in the night,
from the presence and the absence where we meet ourselves,
something remains, drawing us into the light of life
as if the sign of the shadows had sealed
its secret creatures with flame.

Thinking: The Ridiculous Edition
Sometimes I sit down and all I can think is MY LIFE IS RIDICULOUS.

Is this real life?
I busted my head on the backseat of a 15 passenger van trying to remove it from the aforementioned van. My head is still throbbing. This is about as good an example of the summer as I can give you.

See Amy Go.
Have I mentioned that camp is total chaos? It is, in the best possible way, and all the staff aren't even HERE YET!!!! Oh, and it's hot as shit.
In lieu of my own regular posts, they are going to be fewer and further between now because camp internet is questionable at best, I want to foward everyone to my dear friend Amy's blog. This chronicled her adventures as she backpacked through Europe and parts of the Middle East and NOW her adventures teaching English in Chile. She is quirky, smart, and very funny so I think her travels are worth checking out.
That is all. Carry on.

hummingbird
I was sitting at the bar in the kitchen the other morning, staring out the window, when I saw this male ruby throated hummingbird flitting around the feeders my mom had just put out. I dashed to my room, grabbed my digital camera, and started snapping shots through the window. I zoomed in about halfway, turned the flash off, and hoped for the best. These two shots were the best of the group and, natch, are the only ones I uploaded. I think they are a little dark (I am really sad that you can see his ruby chest), but I'm not sure how to fix that. His wings are just a little blurry in the second shot, and I bet if I had put the camera on the sport shot, you know for those ACTION PACKED PHOTOZ, they'd have been clearer. We live and we learn, don't we?

I am always open to tips and suggestions, so if any of you photo takers have any things I could do to make my pictures better, please let me know! I know "learn the features of your camera" is at the top of your list.

Goodbye, Sweet Lady!
Today we made the decision to euthanize our cat, Sand. Her kidneys had completely shut down, she was having seizures, and she had bleeding ulcers in her esophagus. She was 16 years old. We will miss you, Sandypants. You were one of a kind.

With love.

It's a photo post!
Zeb is totally obsessed with playing brickbreaker on my BlackBerry. He loves this game. If I am not using my phone or taking a nap or something, I will let him play with it. Today, I was going through the pictures on my phone and I found these:

Good GRACIOUS! I love those kids.

updates/edits
I have been slowly updating and reworking things over here for the past few weeks. I've been adding sites/blogs to the Read It. Buy It. Love It. section, and I added a tags/labels cloud you can more easily find entries that are relevant to your interests. I am also trying to pick back up with twitter, so if you are interested, you can follow me there at https://twitter.com/kashmirror. I am cautiously optimistic about the year ahead of me, so keep your fingers crossed. I am going to try to take the internet along for the ride!

this is just something I want to remember.
Today I was showing a picture to my mother of a friend of mine's new tattoo. Her tattoo is beautiful. It is mostly just an outline right now, but it is a half sleeve, shoulder to elbow, of a woman with stars in her long, flowing hair and she is wrapped in a loose fitting dress. She said she has to do 2-3 more sittings before it's complete. Anyway, so I showed it to my mother and she was aghast that someone would want to have a tattoo so big. I kept saying "it's so beautiful! look at how beautiful it is!" and she said to me "it's not about it being ugly or beautiful, it's the size. I like small tattoos, like yours."
My mom, who I HID MY TATTOOS FROM FOR THREE YEARS, told me she liked my tattoos. Woah.
